Groundwater Levels are Declining
Spring flows began declining in the 1970s, due in part to massive water use in Northeast Florida. An increase in water use takes away underground water from the Ichetucknee River and Springs. Water levels in North Florida are declining, which is troubling because groundwater in the Floridan aquifer is the source of drinking water for millions of people in Florida.
Nitrate Increase
Pollutants such as nitrates damage the underwater plant ecology and have massive effect on the health of the river. The primary source of this pollution are fertilizers, animal waste, and septic tanks.
